Unit 1 - Conduct Pre-Operational Checks
Observation Elements
- Locate and check the main isolator switch
- Check crane structure and rails for condition and obstructions
- Check crane structure and rails for damage
- Check that all controls on controller are identified
- Check controller buttons are not damaged
- Check controller is the correct controller
- Check the hook has a safety catch fitted and is working
- Check for damage to the hook
- Check for the MRC on the hook
- Check the hook MRC matches the MRC on the crane
- Check to ensure th hook spins freely
- Check the cables for kinks, frays or broken wires
- Check reeving on the sheaves is correct
- Check reeving on the hoist rope drum drum is correct
- Check sheaves are rotating freely and are not damaged
- Check operation of all crane and hoist movements (Test)
- Check operation north, south, east & west to ensure correct operation (Test)
- Check free travel of cantenary cabling
- Check hoist movement up & down (Test)
- Check hoist limit switch operation (Test)
- Check hoisting and travelling brakes (Test)
- Check emergency stop on controller (Test)
- Check & listen for abnormal noise from machinery (Test)
- Check & listen for abnormal behaviour from machinery (Test)
- Checks and test horn function (Test)


* Operator understands the correct action to take if any damage or defect is detected during the Pre-operational check.
Unit 2 - Inspect Site and Work Plans
Observation Elements
- Check for obstacles / hazards / ground condition
- Apply controls for obstacles / hazards / ground conditions
- Know and use site pedestrian management procedures
- Wear required PPE (High Vis, Safety glasses etc)
- Checks for overhead obstructions, powerlines, etc
- Checks work area for obstruction, traffic, pedestrians
 
Unit 3 - Equipment Operations
Observation Elements
- Observe
- Check work area / blind spots / pedestrians
- Ensures correct use of warning devices
- Hook block is safely positioned over the load
- Lifting equipment and gear are connected to load and used safely
- Maintains safe distance from other vehicles and pedestrians
- Loads are mobiled using relevant bridge or gantry crane movements
- Load and bridge or gantry crane movement is monitored constantly and operated safely
- Load positioned correctly relative to attachment before lifting
- Load is lowered and landed safely
- Lifting gear is disconnected from load and positioned safely
- All required communication signals are correctly interpreted and followed
- Control - Maintains safe control at all times
- Signals are interpreted and observed
- Ensure correct use of Park brake
- Ensure correct control used
- Good load control is maintained
- Observation and Planning used
- Confidence Level
- Ensure correct use of LOTO
- Attitude toward safety and operation of equipment
 
Unit 4 - Shutdown Equipment
Observation Elements
- Lifting equipment and gear are inspected for defects, and defective items are isolated, tagged and reported
- Bridge or gantry crane is parked in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safe work procedures
- Bridge or gantry crane lifting gear and associated equipment are stowed and secured
Unit 5 - Secure the Site
Observation Elements
- Bridge or gantry crane is shut down and secured
 • Engages isolator switch
 • Engages emergency stop
- Conducts post operational checks
